A guide to choosing jade in Singapore
Jan 30, 2024
Whether you are looking to surprise a significant other or buy a gift for yourself, you can never go wrong with jade! However, before you set out on your search, it is important to understand the grades and qualities of jade to make an informed decision. In this guide, in addition to introducing the different categories of jade, and the factors to consider before selecting one, we will also provide tips on where you can find this precious gemstone and why you should visit a reputable retailer.
What are the types of jade available in Singapore?
Not all jade is created equal. Before selecting a piece of jade, it is important to understand the three different grades in the classification of gemstones. We at Gen.K Jewelry® would recommend those who are looking to get their hands on it to select only the highest grade. Each piece of jewelry in our boutique is in its natural form, free from alterations in colour and transparency, staying true to the inherent beauty of Grade A.
Grade A
Grade A jadeite is known as the pinnacle of jade quality, as it is in its natural form and free from any chemical treatments to alter its colour or transparency. It may be coated in a layer of wax as part of the polishing process, which is acceptable if there is no damage done to the crystalline structure.
Grade B
Grade B jadeite has been treated with chemicals and/or bleached to remove impurities. This results in gaps being created in the gemstone, causing the crystalline structure to be damaged, leading to a placement lower in grade. It is usually then followed by the injection of polymer resin to fill the gaps before being polished. Additionally, the resin, when exposed to sunlight and heat, can turn yellowish.
Grade C
When it comes to Grade C, gemstones which fall into this category have undergone all the treatments and processes of Grade B along with the addition of dye to the polymer resin. These extensive processes to which the jade is subjected cause them to be placed in this category.
What are the factors to consider when choosing jade?
Colour
When you think of jade, a green gemstone is what typically comes to mind. You can find it available in a wide spectrum of colours such as lavender, white, and pink. Each hue carries its charm, allowing you to choose a gem that is suited towards your taste and style.
Clarity
Examining the gemstone for any inclusions, blemishes, or imperfections can help determine its overall quality. The more translucent a piece of jade is, the more valuable it is determined to be. When it comes to selection, consider the level of transparency and any natural markings, as they contribute to the unique character of the jade.
Cut and Shape
The cut and shape of jade can influence its visual appeal. A well-crafted cut enhances the gem’s attractiveness and showcases its beauty. Inspect the symmetry, proportions, and craftsmanship of the jade, to decide if it is the right one for you. Additionally, you can consider different motifs such as mythical creatures like the dragon and phoenix, or one with inspiration from contemporary designs. This is where cultural aspects also can come into play if you are looking for jade that carries a personal significance.
Where can you find jade in Singapore?
Gem and Jewelry Exhibitions
Exhibitions are where you can find several retailers in a single location. If you have no specific requirements when it comes to jade, this is a good place to start. You can explore the different types of jade available, along with their colours, and styles, and get to know what suits you best.
Online Platforms
When it comes to convenience, online platforms take the top place as you can browse through and purchase jade from the comfort of your home. Despite it being an easily accessible choice, there are several risks involved such as the possibility of ending up with a fake or subpar gemstone being passed off as an authentic piece.
Specialised Jade Retailers
If you would like to learn more about jade, then visiting a specialised jade retailer will be a good step to take. Their staff can answer your questions about the gemstone, as well as help you discover what you are looking for. These establishments often curate a collection of high-quality jade pieces, providing a more personalised shopping experience.
What is the importance of going to a reputable retailer?
Authenticity and Quality
Reputable retailers prioritise the authenticity and quality of their jade products. They source their gemstones from reliable suppliers and provide certification or detailed information about the jade’s origin, treatment, and grade. This ensures that you are getting a genuine and high-quality piece, meeting your expectations and long-term satisfaction.
Knowledgeable staff and expert advice
Having knowledgeable staff guide you through the selection process can lead to a smoother experience as they possess an understanding of jade, including its different types, grades, and characteristics. This also allows you to make an informed decision based on the unique qualities of the gemstone.
Transparent Pricing
The retailer can provide information about the factors influencing the cost of jade such as its grade, craftsmanship, colour, clarity, and any treatments they may have undergone. Transparent pricing helps you understand the value of the jade you are purchasing, removing the risk of being misled about the true worth of the gemstone.
